Marine and coastal biodiversity is an important asset in
many tropical countries – because it supports
commercially valuable fisheries, forms the basis of the
tourism industry, and underpins production and
consumption in many other sectors of the economy.
Unfortunately both government and the private sector
often engage in construction, industrial and other
development activities in ways which harm the natural
environment – and thereby undermine these important
sources of income, employment and production.
We have been working with The Nature Conservancy
(TNC) in Indonesia to calculate and present data on the
value of marine and coastal biodiversity, so as to make
the economic and business case for investing in its
conservation.
