Business not only impacts on ecosystems and ecosystem services, but also depends upon them – the loss of ecosystem services poses business risks, and yet ecosystem services may also present new business opportunities. While leading companies acknowledge the importance of identifying their ecosystem impacts and dependency, many are still struggling with exactly how to integrate this information into core operational and corporate decisions. Economic valuation is one approach that lends its support to this challenge by quantifying ecosystem relationships and expressing them in monetary units that are directly linked to a company’s bottom line.
We have been working with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and Ecosystem Economics LLC to prepare a fact sheet and catalogue for the corporate sector on existing ecosystem valuation initiatives, methods, approaches, techniques, tools and guidelines, to assess their business applicability, and find case studies of how businesses have used ecosystem valuation to assess and improve their performance.
