It is now recognised that natural ecosystems play an
important role in supporting climate change mitigation and
adaptation. Integrated conservation and economic
development planning, which supports the collaborative
management of ecosystems, can provide a cost-effective
strategy for building climate change resilience – at both
local and global levels. These benefits (and the costs of
ecosystem loss) are however poorly understood, rarely
articulated, and for the most part omitted from the
policies, strategies and plans that determine how land,
resources and funds are managed and used.

We have been working with the
World Wide Fund for
Nature (WWF) in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet
Nam to overcome these gaps in information and
awareness, by modelling the economic value of
ecosystem services, at regional, national and landscape
levels. The aim is to generate data to be used to
persuade decision-makers to support integrated
conservation and development strategies, especially
those relating to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
